Do Hedgehogs bite?
No, or rather, very rarely.
Hedgehogs have tiny sharp teeth and a strong jaw
that allows them to feed and
occasionally defend themselves.
We always recommend using gloves when
handling hedgehogs,
more because of their spines than their teeth.
Generally, they are very timid indeed and do not bite except in extreme self-defence.
If they can't protect themselves by closing into a ball.
Females may bite males to avoid overly persistent courtship, or to defend their little hoglets from possible predators (including humans).
Males may bite other hedgehogs if they approach "their" female, or "their" meal especially in times when they are hungry and if food is in short supply.
