Hedgehog with a runny nose?
What to do if a hedgehog
has lots of sniffles?
A runny nose is not always a symptom of a disease.
If a hedgehog has just woken up it is quite normal.
Many people after waking up in the morning have to blow their noses.
This is because when you wake up your metabolism starts.
Heartbeat and breathing increase in frequency and internal fluids move.
If the nose of a hedgehog loses too much "liquid" continuously or if it loses thick yellow-green mucus, then there are some problems.
Possibly lung parasites or pneumonia.
If this is the case the hedgehog must be taken to a CRAS (if in Italy), as soon as possible, or a qualified centre or vet. Again we repeat the advice to always use gloves when handling.
